India has huge resources of the most beautiful varieties of natural stones. Due to their durability, homogeneity and attractive colours, natural stones are eminently suitable for monumental and architectural applications. Till date the bulk of the demand for such decorative stones has been in the foreign markets. But the domestic market too is waking up to the tremendous potential of stones.

The Orissa Mining Corporation Limited is a leading public sector undertaking of its kind in the country. It has 4 decades of experience in mining of various ores like iron ore, manganese, chromite, limestone etc. More than half of its turnover comes from export of various minerals.

As Orissa is also endowed with vast resources of granites, OMC has taken up a detailed exploration programme for identifying and establishing the high quality reserves with a view to taking up their scientific development. The granite properties of OMC have been subjected to detailed investigation starting from geomining properties to laboratory studies for determination of their chemical and petrological qualities. At present OMC possesses around 40 million cubic metres of granite resources and is in the process of rapidly acquiring more resources. OMC granites come in many colours like black, grey, pink, white, green, blue, and in many multicolours. They have been exhibited in international and national exhibitions and many of the colours are established in the market.

OMC is the premier agency in Orissa for promoting granite projects and is in the process of setting up joint venture projects with reputed companies. These projects will involve an integrated approach for mechanical mining, processing and marketing of blocks and value added projects like slabs, tiles, monument tools etc. OMC intends to set up several more such projects in the near future.

Market Response to OMC Granites:

OMC granites have been exhibited in fairs in Italy, Germany, U.S.A., & South East Asia to assess the market demand and create awareness about the quality.

The response of the foreign buyers has been favourable as the stones are generally hard, homogeneous, and take good polish. The major uses for which the stones can be put are for wall claddings, floorings, stairs, tops, also for monuments and memorials. The large size of some of the deposits as well as the large blocks which can be produced, are perceived as major plus points.
