WELFARE


As one of the premier mining companies in the country, OMC has deployed more than 10,000 workers/employees in its Iron ore, Manganese ore and Chromite ore mines in the state of Orissa. 

A Welfare committee has been formed which visits different mines/regions to fill pulse of the staff/workers and suggest measures for their weal and woe. It has been planned as a grievances redressal mechanism of the corporation.

During the 2003-04, a number of labour welfare measures were taken up. Peripheral development, scholarship scheme, bonus and incentive to workers and emplyees and development in the mines and camps as a part of labour welfare have also been augmented.

For the well being and general welfare of the employees, the Corporation has introduced various welfare schemes, some of which are indicated below:

Housing: Almost all the employees have been provided with Corporation quarters. While the accommodation is free at Mines and Camps, a rent nominal rent is charged at Regional Offices and HO. Where quarters are not available, house rent allowance is provided.

HospitalHealth: Free medical facilities are provided to employees and their families at the 36 bedded hospital in the Chrome Zone as well as at the various smaller hospitals and dispensaries run by the Corporation having modern diagnostic and pathological test facilities. Wherever necessary, patients are referred to reputed hospitals around the country at Corporation expense.

Education: OMC runs fully fledged high schools at Daitari and Kaliapani as well as primary schools at various other locations. Where the schools are run by private agencies, OMC provides annual grant-in-aid. OMC also provides School bus facilities in some areas. For meritorious students, OMC provides scholarships for higher education. In addition, OMC for the first time has instituted Cash Awards for the best 3 tribal students of Keonjhar district on the basis of their performance in the Matriculation exam.

Social Security: Employees of OMC are covered by various schemes such as EPF/CPF, Gratuity, Group Insurance Scheme, Rehabilitation Scheme for legal heir of deceased employees, as well Bonus and Productivity Linked Incentive schemes. The Corporation also has an attractive Voluntary Retirement Scheme.

Advances & Allowances: Employees are provided with advances for various necessities such as house building, purchase of vehicle, marriage, festivals, medical etc. at very low, or in some cases, no interest. OMC also provides conveyance allowance for employees with vehicles and field allowance for employees posted in the field as well as livery/washing allowance for Class III and Class IV employees.

Recreation and cultural activities: OMC is sanctioning substantial amount for recreation and cultural activities of its employees. Regular film shows, opera shows and Dramas are conducted by the employees. Besides, recreation clubs with TV and Dish Antenna facilities are functioning in each Mine. In order to conduct various cultural programmes OMC is maintaining community centres in HO and in some bigger mines.

Canteen: In all Mines/regional offices and in HO the company has provided subsidized canteen facilities for employees. OMC has provided building, utensils, staff etc. to the canteens free of cost.

Holiday Home: One Holiday Home is being maintained at Puri for the benefit of employees. Each employee is eligible to avail the Holiday Home once in every year.

Old employees: Employees who have completed 25 years of service are honoured with a citation and a gift. On retirement too, employees are suitably felicitated and given memento's as a mark of recognition of their service.

Suggestions & Grievances: OMC has a New Ideas Scheme with cash awards to encourage employees to actively think of ways to help the organisation. Even the juniormost employee has the opportunity to meet the chief executive of the Corporation and vent his grievances through the Grievance Cell.

Training: OMC has a training cell and sponsors its employees to participate in various training programmes conducted by different professional institutes for updating their knowledge and to increase their working efficiency.

Peripheral Development Programme: OMC spends a substantial amount in the shape of grant-in-aid to various educational institutions located in the surrounding villages of OMC Mines for construction of building, laboratory, library etc. Besides digging of tube wells, construction and repair of villages roads, culvert and plantation etc. are being undertaken in the periphery villages. OMC also contributes towards development of Sports and Culture as well as for health and immunization programme and Literacy campaign in periphery villages.

Sports: OMC has also been promoting sports in a big way. OMC donated a cheque of Rs.1,10,000/- to the promising Karateka Ms. Saswati Samantara, a five time National Champion in Shotokan style and a second dean Black Belt to compete in the 3rd World Junior and Cadet Karatedo Championship at Marseille, France.

OMC has has also hosted the first ever OMC Cup Cricket Tournament 2004 amongst different State PSU's in February 2004. It shall be an annual event where more PSU's are expected to participate.

OMC also donates to various institutions like the Indian Red Cross Society, Chief Minister's Relief Fund, various Athletic Associations etc.
